General Summary:
Operate medium and larger size single axle trucks following DOT and OSHA requirements lead and direct other crew members to support and, maintain proper inventory of tools and materials for the bucket truck, and perform daily maintenance and inspection of truck. This person is at the senior construction level position within our ranks and is responsible for performing these tasks all under the direction and training from management.
Essential Job Functions:
Safely lead and direct crew member or members as needed to construct aerial communications plant to customer specifications.
1. Perform or assign duty to crew member(s) to perform vehicle and/or trailer inspections and prepare for the daily assignments. (10%)
- Perform daily pre-trip DOT vehicle inspections using inspection books provided.
- Perform daily checks of basic engine fluids and on-board displays showing tire pressure and other reminders.
- Perform basic “house cleaning” of truck interior, windows, mirrors, storage bins, and bed daily.
- Perform exterior washing of truck as needed.
- Stock the trucks with the proper safety equipment, tools, and materials.
- Assist in the loading and/or unloading of conduit, coax, or fiber reels from trailers.
- Ensure that all items in the bed space are secured, and that the trailer is fully connected and proper.
- Ensure that all trailer lighting and brakes (if equipped) are functioning properly.
- Grease and/or lubricate specified points on aerial lift and arbor equipment.
2. Perform safe operation of medium and larger size single axle trucks following DOT and OSHA Work requirements. (20%
- Drive an aerial lift or flatbed truck to and from the jobsite and within the jobsite as needed.
- Position aerial lift truck or flatbed truck and trailer for strand or cable deployment.
- Perform basic, intermediate, and complex aerial lift tasks associated to construct aerial communications plant.
3. Possess the ability to safely ascend and descend utility poles utilizing approved pole climbing gear.
- Perform basic, intermediate, and complex tasks to construct aerial communications plant using pole climbing gear while ascended on a utility pole.
4. Safely lead and direct crew member or members on ground, aerial lift and climbing tasks to support aerial communications plant construction. (60%)
- Set up and/or take down work area protection at job site (signs, cones, etc.)
- Study and understand various work prints, observe, and retain the processes of various job site assessments, setups, and the procedures of doing the actual work.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area by picking up work related debris/waste, tools, and/or equipment from the ground.
- May require handling of conduit, strand, cable, or fiber by pulling it off the reel as needed. Lead and direct crew member or members in securing the worksite from the general, public during mobile operations.
- Document specific notes and other information onto work prints, work orders, or logs as needed relating to completed work items, irregularities, or other important, information. 5. Perform end of day activities. (10%)
- Complete DOT post-trip inspection started in the morning. Deposit inspection slips in container provided.
- Remove any accumulated trash, debris, tools, and/or materials and either dispose in dumpster or return to designated location.
- Deposit fuel slips as applicable into container provided.
- If company vehicle is parked outside, it must be parked properly, locked, and keys returned to the keyboard.
- Complete time sheet and address any notes left by management.
6. Perform other miscellaneous duties as directed by management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and understand design prints and specifications.
- Know, understand, and adhere to all company, OSHA, and DOT safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to read and understand DOT traffic patterns and set up safe work zones accordingly.
- Ability to safely drive a medium size single axle truck/trailer on both highways and surface streets with acute trailer backing skills.
- Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment (truck).
- Ability to direct and use team building skills to teach all aspects of communication construction to other workers.
- Ability to work with basic hand tools and all communication construction tools as required.
- Ability to communicate any deficiencies with company tools, equipment, and trucks.
- Ability to communicate desired traffic control needs to any hired traffic control personnel.
- Ability to handle extension ladders on and off trucks and to and from work sites.
- Ability to communicate with others using two-way devices (radios, intercoms).
- Ability to understand NESC clearance, pole space and pole framing specifications.
- Ability to safely ascend and descend an extension ladder.
- Ability to ascend and descend utility poles using both ladders and climbing gaffs.
- Possess knowledge perform complex pole framing, fiber, and coax winching and lashing functions.
- Acute knowledge of all tools required to build communications plant.
- Must be able to lift 70+ pounds.
- Should be able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays for emergency repairs.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or the equivalent. One to two years of related work experience in Telecom construction preferred.

Working Conditions:
Usual outdoor working conditions including occasional exposure to elements such as noise, dust, cold/heat, rain, snow, mud, and traffic/interruptions. Some elements present that make conditions less than desirable than usually found in an office. Proper attire is required.
